Fort d'une carrière débutée en 1979, Richard Garriott est devenu l'une des principales figures de la scène MMO.
En 1979, il conçoit son premier jeu de rôle, Akalabeth, pour Apple II avant d'initier la saga des Ultima à partir de 1980, chez Origin Systems, le studio fondé avec son frère, Robert Garriott, à Austin, au Texas. La série des Ultima comptera neuf opus et surtout Ultima Online que l'on considère généralement comme le MMORPG ayant popularisé le genre en occident, dès 1997.
En mars 2000, faute d'une liberté suffisante, Richard Garriott quittera le studio Origin pour fonder Destination Games, toujours avec son frère et Starr Long. Ils y poseront les bases du MMO de science-fiction « Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa » avant que Destination Games ne devienne la filiale américaine du coréen NCsoft, le 17 mai 2001.
