So, basically, if two people were fighting each other using bladed weapons made completely out of wood, I think neither of them would have an absolute advantage over the other no matter what kind of wood they'd use, since if one guy was using heavier wood and the other guy was using lighter wood, they'd both have advantages and disadvantages.
Citation :
Sounds more then awesome, but i sure hope you guys don't just balance everything to 100% and leave space for materials that are actualy better then others at what they do
There is of course a ladder-like structure somewhere in this system. But we're on dangerous grounds here, as it's very far from the "ladder/level"-system in most other MMO's due to the nature of the game. Let me explain:

Iron (Pig Iron) vs Steel is an example of where one material of the same category is much better in all areas, unless you count availability/price, and difficulty level when crafting.

In a "normal" casual MMO, where you never loose your items, this would mean Pig Iron is worthless during around 98% (or more) of your total playing time. It would be just another step in the level ladder, meaning you either are "beneath" using Iron (lvl 1-20), you are "currently" using Iron (lvl 21-25), or you are "above" using Iron (lvl 26-80+).

However, in MO there are no levels and you lose all weapons when you die, meaning you will sometimes need to use Iron no matter how long you have played the game, as that is the best currently available material in that specific situation. (You have no money, the available local blacksmiths are noobs etc). Likewise, if two materials are essentially the same but one has 5% more durability than the other (meaning it's simply a better material), but the time and money needed for crafting the better material into a blade is *2, you still won't see many of those weapons.

Also, it's very possible that in the fighting-with-only-wooden-blades-situation one "wood-material" would actually be of supreme quality because of it's durability and hardness/sharpness/damage. Yes, the wielder of the lighter wood would be faster, but not so much it would actually compensate for the low damage (as the speed range that goes from very light materials to very heavy is a bit different than the damage range). The simple reason behind this is that the main "purpose" of wood isn't for it to be used for blades. However, if you try to craft bows instead, there is a huge difference between the different qualities, and again it would be hard to decide what material is "the best".

Last but not least, there are indeed a few legendary materials that puts all other materials in the shade. But as they are so exceptionally rare we haven't even counted them in the PP equation. And no-one should count on ever attaining one of them either. You may call me on this and say "you're naive, because eventually some guilds will have accumulated enough to use them on a daily basis anyway, it's just the way the grind in MMO works". But I'm not referring to the common/special/rare materials that you can "grind" here, I'm talking about those who are limited/regulated by unique events.
Citation :
Will some weapon heads be restricted to some handle heads? I mean if i put a giant maceball on a long, thin, light stick (that might be used for a spear or so) the handle should just break after a swing or two...
Yes, there will be restrictions (those have been taken into account in the PP calculation, by the way). You cannot fit a pole-axe-head directly onto a one-hand-sword-handle, for instance, as the axe-head needs some kind of shaft for attachment. You may still put it on a very short handle though. Also, your actual example will work, but just like you say, it will brake very soon because of the low durability of the shaft.

Ok, let's talk a bit about the progress with bows and archery.

Crafting
There will be three main categories of bows: Short, Long and Asymmetrical. When crafting a bow, you must first decide on an overall shape from one of these categories. A Short bow doesn't require much strength and can be used on horseback, but has a relatively short range. A Longbow can't be used when mounted, requires a great deal of strength but also has a long range. An Asymmetrical bow has great range and can be used when mounted, but is much harder to aim with.

Next, you must decide if it's going to be a Self bow (made from one material) or a Composite bow (made in layers).

Then it's time to decide the shape of the limbs. A Composite bow may have limbs that are Decurve- Flat- or Recurve-shaped. A Self bow may not use Recurve-shaped limbs though (due to the extreme strain that would be put on the one material). Decurve, Flat or Recurve limbs will determine how much strain is put on the bow (durability), but also have an impact on the required draw strength (strength requirement, focus time), the range and the damage of the bow.

Each of the above choices will contribute to the characteristics of the final bow.

Finally, and this is of course a very important step, it's time to choose the material (or materials) for the bow. The materials used will greatly affect the final outcome. A Self bow is made out of only one material and is rather quick and easy to craft. A Composite bow consists of two layers, the back (outside) and the belly (facing the archer) of the bow, and you also decide the ratio between these two materials. Materials also behave differently depending on if they are used for the belly or the back.

Shooting
It's still really too early to tell, but right now (Combat Beta) shooting is done in arcs, with traces and simulated "real" trajectories. We're really doing our best to keep it for release, but we have to run some more tests to see how expensive it really is.

That said, if we can keep it, needless to say it's going to have a large impact on archery. Although not very apparent when shooting at close-distance objects, it really makes a huge difference when shooting mid- to long-range. Also, right now it's actually possible to shoot the arrow straight up and hit yourself on it's way down(!), if you're very "lucky"
The damage from an arrow will decrease according to velocity or range, meaning hitting a nearby target will do more damage than hitting one at a greater distance.

Ok, I guess I'll have to explain this:

Instead of shooting in a straight line until the arrow magically disappears, you shoot in an arc that takes gravity into account. This means that if you shoot from afar you will have to aim a bit higher, and that you can actually shoot volleys against your opponent. It also means that an archer can aim 45° to shoot through a hole in the wall, and that the arrow (if correctly aimed) will fly through the window, and then start to plummet (and maybe hit someone on the other side). Or that you can shoot straight up in the air, and get hit by the arrow on it's way down.

With "traces" I mean that an arrow doesn't simply "trace" and hit it's target instantaneously upon release. Instead, several traces are being made, one from the shooter -> 20m, then one from 20m -> 40m, then one from 40m -> 60m etc. This means that an arrow flies in increments, and that you can actually (if you're really quick) run away from an incoming shot.

At the moment we have a problem with arrows, in that they "come with the bow". Meaning a specific short bow has it's specific arrows, shape-wise.

You can change the material of the arrow-head (and the material affects a lot), but we have to solve the visual (shape) representation of different arrow types.

There will be different types of arrows, focusing on different types of damage (or even making noise). But again, right now they unfortunately all look the same, except for the material

Has there been any work on how the different type of arrow damage works yet? Such as for the concern about hitting heavily armored opponents?
Yes. Your best option is to go with a very sharp arrow dealing a lot of piercing damage. Or a heavy arrow with a lot of blunt damage (that doesn't fly very far due to its weight). And aim for unprotected body parts. Still, it will be pretty ineffective against a good full plate armor, unless you are very close, or if you are firing a heavy longbow or crossbow.

But with piercing damage, you may hit a gousset. This is one of the few things in combat that are "simulated" or "random", as we simply can't have 20 hitboxes. Your skill as a player will let you aim and shoot at specific body parts. Your character's skill, your bow and your arrow will modify the chance to hit a gousset on that body part, meaning it will ignore most of the armor defense if it does.

Still, the best thing to do if you're an archer and spot someone in heavy full plate coming towards you, is run.

Citation :
Quote:
If there is an arrow designed to penetrate armor, how does that affect shields?
The more damage an arrow does, the more durability is subtracted from the shield. Depending on the material of the shield, it may be better or worse against different types of damage.

I remember reading either in the power point or somewhere else that if you block/parry with a sword against a melee attack you have to direct it.
If this is true and you can block arrows with a shield, is there the slim possibility that someone could "get lucky" and block and/or deflect the arrow with a blade?
Yes, you can definitely block arrows with your shield, but it does require a bit of skill. It is also possible to block arrows with your sword (as it's a mesh that is included in the calculations of the arrow) but you have to be very lucky. Or extremely skilled, and lucky http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
Citation :
Citation :
Does it take any off the durability of a sword if you block an arrow with it?

It depends. As the sword is accounted for during collision even if you don't actively "block" with it, it's possible for someone to shoot at you and hit your sword (hanging on your hip) for instance. It will count as an "equipment hit". The arrow will do full damage against your sword, making it lose some of it's durability (although not much).

But if you actively try to block the arrow (by blocking) and manage to actually aim and block it, it will count as a "perfect block". On a perfect block the damage to durability is reduced.

The same system also applies to attacks and blocks with all other weapons, such as swords and shields.

Are arrows hittable in the air, like can I hit it and smack it down with my sword?
Eh, well, you can stand in their way. And if you strike or reach out with your sword they might collide with it, as usual. But now we're probably talking 1/1000 in you succeeding in doing so, because an arrow is very, very fast http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
Citation :
And will different materials resist damage more then others? IE bronze sword will take more damage then an iron.
Yes, in many ways. As an example: An armor will have a Durability value. It will also have a Durability Type. And it will have different "Absorption" to different types of damage.
Citation :
how will crossbows differ in their trajectories according to speed and weight.

They will simply have longer range and deal more damage.
Citation :
Citation :
Absortion? Like, it can take so and so damage without any durability damage, or it can take hits from say physical damage moreso then range ( or blunt vs pierce, you get it )

Hard to explain, but like this:

You are hit with a club. The club deals a lot of Blunt Damage, let's say 20. You have a Padded Leather Armor that reduces the damage from the club, meaning you take 10 damage. Now, due to the nature of the armor, it has a high Absorption value against Blunt Damage, meaning it takes 1 damage to it's Durability.

You are hit with a club. The club deals a lot of Blunt Damage, let's say 20. You have a Scale Mail Armor that reduces the damage from the club, meaning you take 3 damage. Now, due to the nature of the armor, it has a low Absorption value against Blunt Damage, meaning it takes 4 damage to it's Durability.

What this means is that the damage that is passed on to you doesn't necessarily have to do with how much damage is done to the armor. In the above example, leather armor will stay in good shape now matter how much you pound it with a club. But a scale mail will eventually get dented.
Citation :
Citation :
I can see the dmg mod you mention at mid range however wouldnt you think that after a greater distance of travel adding in the arc and gravity you would still do a fair amount of DMG?
Yes, it will still do a fair amount of damage. In other words the damage range doesn't go from 100% all the way down to 0%.
Citation :
Citation :
You mentioned that arrows that pierce would be the most effective against armored targets. Is there any reason why anyone would use a different type of arrow for lightly armored targets?
No, not unless you take availability and price into account.

Citation :
Is damage calculated by the speed of the arrow, or difference in elevation between shooter and target? Do arrows change speed at different points in the arc, or would that be too taxing on processing?
The damage decreases slightly according to range. We cannot change the speed of the arrow during flight (too expensive) and simply taking elevation into account would lead to other problems.
Citation :
Why exactly is calculating trajectory difficult? Are you finding that the calculations are putting excessive strain on the processing budget?
It's not difficult, but it puts a lot of strain on the processing budget. Also, the traffic (communicating the data to other clients) is horrible. Please remember that we're not talking about an example where one guy is shooting an arrow now and then, we have to take into account the possibility of a large number of archers gathering up and firing their arrows at the same time over and over again. In a not very large example the processing has to be multiplied by maybe 10 (archers), and the traffic has to be multiplied by 10 (archers) and multiplied again, by perhaps 20, as there are 10 people being fired at, and all the combatants (archers, opponents) has to know about all the projectiles ..and suddenly we have 200 messages with trajectory-data being sent by each volley ..for one (1) of all the battles on the server ..and I hope you get the point. We still don't know if we can even keep this for release.

Citation :
Does the arrow graphic and animation match up with the actual game location of the arrow?
As I said before, an opponent will not see your arrow or any streak. But he will hear and see the impact. (the arrow on the ground or in his chest, etc). You on the other hand will see an exact representation of the flight (the traces are visualised by streaks).

Citation :
What are the specifics on the mechanic you just described? Once you fire the arrow, does it "teleport" from your bow to the point 20M away, wait a few ms, then "teleport" to the point 40M away?
Exactly like that, although the numbers are different.

Citation :
About how fast do these arrows fly? I've played some games where it was nigh impossible to hit a moving target at any decent range because of the arrow speed.
We could of course make it fly instantaneous, having the small delays actually makes it more expensive - but it's more realistic and feels better this way. And it's definitely not moving in slow motion, it's very fast.

Citation :
I assume you're using this point mechanic as a way of simplifying the arc trajectories, presumably to save processing. Approx. how many points are used? One point every 20M doesn't really seem like enough to me to aim properly, if you wanted to fire through a small space. Or was that just an example?
Why do you think other MMO's don't have trajectories? Because it's very expensive. It doesn't matter if it seems "enough" to me and you or not. To me, having as little as a 3-point trajectory would be better than using the usual straight line. Don't you agree?

Regarding aiming, it's something you'll have to learn and get used to anyway (meaning even in the 3-point example you would learn how to aim through that small gap). However, the numbers are only examples (they're not evenly distributed) and we do calculate up to 10 points if it's necessary.

Citation :
Also, I appreciate your activity on this thread; archery is my favorite subject in a game, especially if done right. So thank you!
It's not that difficult do do it "right", if you have unlimited processing power and bandwidth. However, this is a MMO and the difficulty lies in representing archery in a believable way, with very limited power and traffic.

Citation :
My 2 cents about damage: I think you guys have it backwards. The farther an arrow goes, the more damage it should do, not less. Arrows gather momentum as they fall, and should do more damage at the bottom of a fall than at the top of an arc. Not to mention that archery is way harder to aim at long distances, and successful shots should be rewarded rather than punished.
You're always rewarded if you hit something, as you still do plenty of damage. We only have three options here (sorry), either we go forwards, backwards, or not modify the damage at all. To me, shooting someone at 5 meters with my longbow and doing less damage than if I shoot him at 80 meters seems very wrong. Doing the same amount of damage from 5, 40 or 80 meters also seems wrong. Letting the initial velocity do more damage from 0-40 meters (where the damage drops from let's say 100-60%, and then continue to do 60% up to 80 meters (if that's the maximum distance) seems like a better option. But this is not decided yet, so any feedback is welcome. Please remember though that this is not science, we also have to balance damage vs range vs difficulty, something that can never be done on paper.
Citation :
Together with the fact that a arrow comes back if you shoot it straight up, which mean gravity is calculated, that means that the arrow will be faster when coming down from far up and thus will make more damage (bigger veolcity)

No, speed is not taken into account, as there is no "speed".
Citation :
Citation :
Uhmm.. maybe i just don't have the knowledge, but why don't you just send packets with the calculated start postion and angle (and the other information needed) and let him calculate the flight path and also let him calculate if the arrow would hit something in between and show it accordingly (What the client actually show is just an image, the real calculation if something gets hit is made on the server), that way we at least would see the arrows.
With moving targets, that would mean player A's version of your arrow would hit player B in his head. Player B might see the arrow pass by and hit player C. Player C might see the arrow miss completely. And at some point during all this player B would all of a sudden spray blood all over the place as he's hit in the stomach, because that's what really happened on the server. Yes, you would see the arrow, but that "image" you're talking about could be very misleading.

I'm very sorry, but technical discussions like this tend to be pointless, at least on my part. It usually ends with me having to write walls of complicated explanations, when I could instead try to explain other stuff about the game.

It's not like we don't know what we're doing (although we'll have to see about that, the game is not out yethttp://www.mortalonline.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif), and we've usually been trying out a number of different approaches before deciding on one. To put it another way, I wouldn't comment on it or answer questions unless I felt I knew what I was talking about.

Hmm. I like the fact that your opponent doesn't see the arrow or tracer, makes it more difficult to see where they're coming from. Although, won't it look funny if you see 3-4 straight lines in your arrow arc? The points I don't think would be very noticable mechanic-wise, but visually it'l be pretty apparent.
It is kind of apparent. However, it's the best we can do and doesn't look too weird (remember that you're seeing the arrowtrail/arc from "behind", not from the side).
Citation :
Citation :
You'll never be able to tell from where the arrows come, the only thing you can see is the damage indicator which shows you from which side the damage comes, but there are 3 archers and thats why the indicator always will show different directions.
The best way would be to look at the impact points of the arrows (on the trees around you). The arrow will face in the direction of the shot.
Citation :
Citation :
Hm. Would it be probable to let the client handle the tracer graphic calcs while the server handles the data? If nobody but you see's the tracer anyway it wouldn't impact other players and would look more fluid. If the end point in both algorithms is the same it would match enough to not be misleading to the shooter.

We tried that just to see how it worked, but the problem is that in the "shoot through a hole"-example the perfect visual arc often differs enough to either shoot through the hole when you don't, or shoot through the wall when it does. It's the same when practicing and shooting on targets. The result is you cannot trust the trace, it's only confusing as it's slightly off - when the most important aspect is that it should actually help you to adjust your aim. So we did what we usually do: we chose what works best and is the most accurate, instead of the eyecandy.

http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gifWhat does that mean? : O

It means it's easy to get all worked up and hyped for a game when just reading about it on paper, imagining (and expecting!) that you actually climb trees and buildings parkour-style, and how you can hear the sound of your opponents keys in his pocket. And far-fetched stuff like that.

Just because I tell you I'm sure we have the most realistic archery of all MMO's out there, doesn't mean you're not in for a disappointment if you start to imagine SimArchery 2009, Deluxe Edition.

It's all very simple. You shoot an arrow, it flies for a while and then hits the ground. Just like it always has in most single-player games. For a MMO it's a small revolution, but hey, if you look behind this technical stuff and forget about the MMO-part it's still "just" an arrow behaving (almost) like you expect it to.

"This means a player could potentially place all of the protection, in the torso while leaving everything else relatively unprotected, or spread out all of the armor to provide reduced protection all over the body"

Cette possibilitee me semble juste enorme.
