Face of Mankind sur KickStarter
Nexeon Tech a lancé un KickStarter pour Face of Mankind: Fall of the Dominion.

The day has come for all of us to prove to the world that sandbox games are the future of MMORPGs. As of today, we have begun a kickstarter campaign for Face of Mankind: Fall of the Dominion.

We have always recognized the potential that lies within the sandbox genre. All of the changes we have made have striven to perfect this, but admittedly, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The last two years have been a learning experience for us, allowing us to see what works and what doesn't. We have paid attention to this though, and the simple truth is that far more than a few small changes and new features is needed for this game to survive.

Players must be able to create their own factions and leave their own mark on the galaxy. They must have goals and aspirations, for without anything to achieve, players will leave of boredom. Players need to be able to define their own identities and histories. The economy needs to be interactive and given much depth, with a plethora of different (legal and illegal) ways of making money. Security must be something that is decided upon by the players, and every action must have an equal and opposite reaction. Roleplay must become natural, with players slipping into the society in a believable way.

All this boils down to what we are calling the "Fall of the Dominion" milestone. It is the ultimate unification of both new and old. Designed using everything that has been learned over the last ten years of the games history, this will go beyond anything that has been done before. This change unfortunately does not come without a price, and one that we cannot bear alone.

Kickstarter provides an opportunity that did not exist before. Where once stood publishers, now stands consumers. As Developers we are able to show gamers what we want to create, and if they like it, make it. This creates incredibly potential in our industry, and allows game studios to take risks and chances that otherwise would never be taken. The sandbox MMO will finally be able to get the attention it deserves.

The next 30 days will decide the fate of Face of Mankind once and for all. The success of our Kickstarter campaign will reflect the success of our milestone, and if it fails, it will not be anywhere near as incredible as we want it to be. If it succeeds, we will be able to finish the milestone, and go even further than we originally intended. If by some strange act of god we manage to reach our highest stretch goal, we will even upgrade the game engine, and with it, the entire design of the game.

Check out our Kickstarter page daily for more updates. We will be detailing everything in the game, and everything that it has taken to get to where we are today.

Hello Kickstarter! We're almost halfway there on our path to getting funded. Many of your questions were about the amount necessary for a full remake of the game with a state-of-the-art rendering technology and everything else that a great online game deserves. And without further ado, we want to present you all our key goals.

The goal of $50,000 is the minimum goal to be able to complete the development work that we started. This includes programming, improving a range of art assets and it will ensure a proper launch with a small advertising budget.

At $75,000 we will be able to afford additional art assets, allowing us to add more character customization to the game. We feel it’s important that you are able to express yourself through your character.

At $100,000 we will expand the galaxy, creating two completely new colonies to explore and conquer. This will expand the size of the Vortex Network and lets us make the galaxy even more epic. Along with these new colonies we will further expand on other content, like new music, items, augmentations and styles for your gear.

At $175,000 we will redesign and remake all of the characters and their equipment (includes nearly all items). We would like to see new avatars that better reflect the cyberpunk theme of the game, and we have always dreamt of redoing the animations.

At $250,000 we will have raised enough capital to fully remake the game, including a new rendering engine, new wide open worlds, new vegetation, vehicles, and breathtaking outdoor complexes. Replacing the rendering engine is no small task, requiring us to remake all of the worlds and rewrite large parts of the code. Using the old assets in a new game engine would be a waste because they are not designed to use any of the newer technologies it would support. The new engine will support DirectX11 and feature deferred rendering, realtime soft shadow maps, dynamic ambient occlusion, motion blur, depth of field, HDR lighting, modern physics, highly enhanced terrain rendering and fog, and support parallax and relief bump mapping. In addition to this, performance will increase significantly due to its ability to utilize newer hardware much more efficiently.

If we reach this stretch goal, we will be holding a party to celebrate! It will be near Houston, Texas, and any backer who pledged $100 or more will be invited to come celebrate with us!

Between these key stretch goals will be a number of sub-stretch goals, giving additional rewards to certain reward tiers along the way. Anything beyond this is more than we could ever dream of, and we will create additional stretch goals if this dream becomes a reality.

Interview with Dylan Zellmer

Hello there backers! Just a quick update today! Over the weekend we did an interview with igameresonsibly.com, which is now available for all of you to read! Join Charles Wood, Marko Dieckmann and Christopher Allford and learn more about what Face of Mankind: Fall of the Dominion is all about!

Marko Dieckmann: "It all began back in 2000 when I somehow had the urge to create something. As I’ve always been a gamer, one thing was clear; it should be about games. I loved the Wing Commander series (WC3 was just incredible), adventures like Monkey Island 1+2, Space Quest, Indiana Jones, and shooters, especially Doom. I have always been enjoying communities. In my early computer days it’s been text-based BBS systems such as the famous Voyager in Berlin. You logged into the system with a modem and used the chat room or shared files. For Doom 2 for example I organized a tournament in the community. We built a set of 3 special maps for that, each with unique music. I guess all that sparked the interest to forge communities, growing them and keeping them alive.

So the first thing I wanted to create was some sort of portal, where players could hang out, list the games they played and then play them together. That even grew to a thought of doing a 3D lobby where players meet and then they would leave through various gates to enter all sorts of games.

But then I thought why not create an online game myself. In early 2001 I’ve laid out the concepts for a game in which players could enjoy a great story, thousands of players, each with their distinctive role. You know, everything someone who thinks up their first game should not do. Too much of everything, impossible to realize. Later that year I witnessed the launch of Anarchy Online, which I was watching for a while. It was a really tough launch that they had, but nonetheless that was the final spark for me. I said to myself, “I want to do that. Yeah, I want to make an MMO."

Update #13 · May 27, 2013

Hello backers!

With only nine days left, we are so close to finally realizing our dream! With just a little less than $6,000 to go, we are all very confident that we will be able to reach the goal and finish the Fall of the Dominion milestone! Your support has been absolutely incredible and we are really excited about the future because of it. Maybe we can even reach for our first stretch goal!

Casino Territory

It’s important for the game to have many different ways for players to interact beyond just simply shooting at one another. For this reason, we thought another really cool idea for a territory would be a casino. This territory will offer a number of interesting mini-games (some multiplayer, some not), that can be used to earn money. The catch though is that the money is not spawned into the economy, but rather taken from the territory owner.

The owners of the territory gain access to interesting logs which will help them keep track of how much the territory is winning and how much it is losing. They have the ability to manipulate the machines to a degree, like any real seedy casino would. Whether or not the players visit it is up to them, so there's some reason to keep at least the illusion that they will win alive.

The mini-game that we will discuss today is the slot machine. Users can spend some credits for a chance to win it big! Owners are able to adjust how often there is a winner (within reason). Competition between different casinos will keep them somewhat honest. The money they spend is stored within the slot machine for a time, before finally being transferred to the faction funds. During this time, hackers may steal money from the machines, but risk leaving behind evidence that will reveal their identity.

More mini-games will be part of the casino, but we felt that the slot machine would allow you all to get a clear picture of the type of place we aim to create. This will be an interesting hangout for many who wish to try their luck and casino operators will have the tools necessary to keep out players they consider too “lucky” for them. Our ultimate dream would be to have multiplayer card games in this casino, but it has yet to be decided whether or not this is something we can get in at launch.

Reddit AMA

We want to try and answer any questions that may be floating around, so we will be holding an AMA tomorrow at 4pm EST on Reddit. Before the AMA begins we will do another update with the URL, where you will all be free to ask us absolutely anything. We hope you will all attend, and we look forward to answering your questions!
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...2a93c70d203c4f

Project Update #14: Pledge Addons and Reddit AMA

Pledge Addons

Over the last week we’ve been periodically updating our “daily deals,” of which many users have asked how they can get them if they’ve already pledged.
For this reason, we have created a number of addons that can be attached to your pledge.
http://mirrors.fom.nexeontech.com/Addons.jpg

For those curious about how this works, simply increase your pledge by the amount your desired addon(s) will cost. At the end of the campaign we will send out surveys, where you will be given the opportunity to say what addons you wanted. Should your pledge amount be sufficient for it, they will be included with the pledge. If they aren’t, we will contact you to discuss options.
Project Update #15: The New Player Experience

incgamers Interview with Chris

Hey there all! We’re going to start out today's update with a link to an interview that incgamers did with Lead Developer Christopher Allford! Learn more about the higher level concepts behind the game over at their website!
http://www.incgamers.com/2013/05/fac...topher-allford
Reddit AMA Completed

Yesterday we did an AMA on Reddit, as mentioned in the previous updates this was an opportunity for anyone to come and ask us whatever questions they can think of. We thank everyone who checked it out and asked questions, we feel it was very productive and should answer any questions that might be floating around about the campaign. You can check out all of the questions and the answers by going to the Reddit thread.

New Player Experience

For our latest update we decided it would be a good idea to put the milestone into a form that people can really relate to and understand. While high-level gameplay concepts and theories are interesting, what really matters is how that plays out when the game is released. This is going to be very detailed, but the specifics of how the tutorial will function are open to change (and most likely will be to some degree).
The first thing we’ll mention is that with this Kickstarter campaign, the Face of Mankind launcher will also be getting a much-needed overhaul. After logging into the launcher you will be able to patch the game. If this is the first time you are opening it, you will instead download the full game through the launcher.
(Images shown are not final interfaces and may change before the release)
http://mirrors.fom.nexeontech.com/launcher.jpg
The Tutorial

Once you have logged in and are done patching, you will be able to start the game. As a new player, you will be sent into the mandatory tutorial, which is designed to help acclimate you to the way the game works; without overwhelming you with unnecessary information about gameplay mechanics you won’t use for days. Our thoughts right now are on a tutorial that plays out a battle in the wars leading to the “Fall of the Dominion.” This specific battle will be the fall of Berlin, taking the player through a number of basic character movement and gear managing tutorials. (It’d be cool if) you would fight an NPC to get a little bit of an idea how combat in the game works.
After you learn about inventory and storage, you will explore hacking very simply, before being killed for the first time. On death you will lose all of the starter gear you acquired and will be sent to the cloning facility, where you will learn about death in Face of Mankind and be explained how gear dropping and skills work. You will go to the vortex gate and learn about tickets and the network, returning you to the battlefield. Here you will learn a little bit about Face of Mankind’s lore and factions, enticed to join or create one for yourself. It will stress the importance of this.
Upon leaving the tutorial you will be assigned a job automatically by the system. This job will be to find a job terminal. To get their starter UC you will have to go through a series of tutorial jobs which will teach you more about the game in a live environment. These jobs will directly reward you for exploring and learning, ultimately directing you to a market territory where you are free to spend your earned credits.
In addition to this, there will also be a knowledge base in the game where you will be able to learn about all of the different things the game has to offer. Certain things will automatically bring up articles of this knowledge base, similar in the way the current tip system works. The ultimate goal of this tutorial will be to acclimate you to the game a little bit and give you the tools needed to survive in it. You will be encouraged to find other players and to explore the game world, while taught the dangers that exist in it and the cautions that must be taken.
Your First Day

Now that you have a grasp on how the game operates, you will be seeking out a faction. The new player jobs will have shown you all the different territories and roles that exist in the game, giving you the funds necessary to survive and start making your mark on the world. In this example you have decided that you want to be a bounty hunter and have applied to join a faction.
http://mirrors.fom.nexeontech.com/hacking.png
Their application gets the attention of the faction leader and you are accepted, making you part of their faction. The first half hour is spent learning how they do business, learning the finer points of the bounty hunting system. This example assumes that although the information is there, you did not read the knowledge base and have a very small understanding of bounty hunting. After spending an hour bounty hunting, you decide it isn’t for you and quit, opting to join a criminal faction instead.
http://mirrors.fom.nexeontech.com/application.png
They teach you how to hack into apartments and terminals, staging a few break-ins on people who they tracked earlier in the day. They explain how tracking works and help you out with a starter tracking implant. You then go around with them, eventually deciding that, while more fun than bounty hunting, this was still not what you wanted to do.
Deciding that perhaps you might switch to the other side, you use the tracking implant and knowledge that they gave you to begin finding criminals for a fee. You create a job so that others can see the services that you are offering, eventually getting one of the players from earlier as a customer. You go to their apartment and track, finding only yourself because of your tracking implant’s quality, versus the skills and items of the experienced players. Wanting to still make the money, you contact the players from earlier and strike a deal to get the items back for a fee. Upon giving them to the player you are paid, deciding perhaps this would be an interesting career.
You immediately convince the faction to work with you, selling stolen items back to the victim under the guise of a detective, growing both operations.
Although robust and probably unlikely to happen on the first day, this is just one of many possible experiences that a new player may have. Some of the roles may be obvious, how they are filled is entirely up to the player and whatever happens is the result of their actions. We cannot begin to imagine what might come as a result of this and we cannot wait to see what is done with the game when it is released.
