MMO Base: Hello, thank you for taking your time for this interview. Can you please shortly introduce yourself to our readers, who you are, what are you doing, etc.
Jason: Sure, I’m Jason Mical, Community Director at En Masse Entertainment. In my position here, I work with the PR, marketing, and Web directors to ensure that our strategies are all designed to work together toward a common vision, that the stuff we do in community fits in with all of the company’s initiatives, and most importantly, that what we do is fun for you guys. If I had to summarize my job in one sentence it would be this: think about all the times I’ve been involved in communities and thought “holy crap, wouldn’t it be cool if they did this,” and then make this a reality here at En Masse for the TERA community.
MMO Base: TERA is marked as a MMO of new generation. Expectations are big in the entire (gaming) world, same as here at Balkan area. Since there are many MMO’s on the market, new titles have to offer something innovative, unique and new, not just copy & paste stuff from other games, which is something most of gamers don’t like at all. Is there something you can show that differentiates TERA from other MMORPG titles?
Jason: TERA’s groundbreaking combat system will set a new standard in MMORPGs, offering all of the depth of an MMO with the intensity and gratification of an action game. The Action/Adventure style combat system allows players to step into a world where their actions, teamwork, and daring combat expertise—not statistics—give them a chance to become true heroes.
The real-time dynamic battle system gives players more control and constant involvement in the action! No more point-and-click or repetitive cycling through a palette of spells and skills. Rather than locking onto targets automatically, the position of your character and the timing of attacks, blocks, and dodges determine the outcome of each confrontation. As a result, combat is more intuitive, exciting, and realistic.
MMO Base: Until now we’ve seen some beautiful screenshots and videos from TERA. Our viewers are hyped day by day only by watching all that beauty. Can you tell us how the PVE system will work? Are there going to be group instances, raids etc.? If yes, what will be the player limit for groups and for raids?
Jason: Yes, all the things you’d expect from a triple-A title will exist in TERA. Group instances and raids are a big part of the PvE experience, as are questing, crafting, and so forth. Most of these systems are being balanced for 5-player parties.
MMO Base: Will TERA offer players PVP arenas or will PVP be mostly done in an open world?
Jason: All servers will have battlegrounds and duels. There will be open-world PvP servers, and PvE servers where PvP is restricted to the battlegrounds and duelling areas.
MMO Base: How will the endgame rewards for PVP and PVE in TERA work? Will there be unique epic sets for all classes?
Jason: The endgame rewards will include a lot of loot of course, but both PvP and PvE players will find themselves embroiled in the politics of the Valkyon Federation at higher levels. There will be political rewards for the ambitious and well-connected, including an unprecedented way to shape the history of the server.
MMO Base: How does the enemy tag/mark system look like in TERA? There are discussions mentioning it is very hard to target an enemy in PVP who is jumping around.
Jason: We’re still balancing this as we continue our testing process. Jumping won’t be a problem in the final game.
MMO Base: You announced thousands of quests in the game. Will the quests be more solo or group oriented?
Jason: We want to make it possible to reach the final levels through solo play alone if that’s how you like to play. However, quests will come in both flavors: solo and group.
MMO Base: Most of gamers like their characters and also like to solve quests that are unique to the class they are playing. Are there going to be quests unique to the classes in TERA?
Jason: Yes, there will be!
MMO Base: Our viewers would also like to know more about trading in game. Will there be Auction Houses in game or maybe Private Shops, or both or even more?
Jason: Both, and maybe even more!
MMO Base: How do factions work in TERA?
Jason: TERA doesn’t have predefined factions—all players are members of the Valkyon Federation, united to stop an ancient evil pervading the land. However, as a vast political body, the Federation is rife with internal corruption and conflicting parties that players will ultimately define. Think of it like the Roman Empire: there’s a lot of money, power, and prestige to be earned within the organization itself, if only you can overcome your political (and oftentimes physical) opponents!
MMO Base: Can we expect closed beta at any time soon? Hype for the game is amazing all over the world and people can’t wait to get their hands on the game.
Jason: We haven’t determined what the next phase of testing looks like, or when it will kick off. Keep an eye on our website and forums for more details; we’ll announce it widely in plenty of time for people to take a day or two off of work!
MMO Base: Would you like to say anything else to our readers?
Jason: We definitely appreciate your interest in TERA and welcome you to log onto our forums and share your points of view about what you’d like to see from our games! Our writers and producers regularly read feedback there and take it into consideration, so your voice will be heard.
MMO Base would like to thank you for this great interview and we hope that TERA will make an earth shake with it’s release. Gaming world needs something innovative, new and better to get a feeling of adrenalin in blood once again. We hope and think that TERA will offer to players exactly that if not even more. Once again thank you and we wish you luck and success in development of TERA. MMO Base is with you!
Jason: And we thank you for that support! See you guys online!
